Last year, over 3,000 Australian SMEs entered various export markets with the help of Export Market Development Grants (EMDG), claiming over $200 million. It’s estimated that there are a similar number who don’t make a claim.

Australian firms claimed over $6 billion as research and development expenditure. This is estimated to be a fraction of the actual amount incurred by Australian businesses, as non-awareness of the ability to make a claim, unfamiliarity with the requirements of the tax concession and aversion to compliance costs cause many firms to resist claiming what they are legally entitled.
