My graduate experience

It was the company culture that first attracted me to a career at BDO. I studied a Bachelor of Professional Accounting with Business Administration at university, so I was always looking to get into a finance role. However it was at a BDO ‘meet and greet’, where everyone was so friendly and welcoming, that I realised BDO was right for me. I did some research into the organisation, and found that with BDO I'd have more exposure to different types of clients and would assume greater responsibilities. All this made it a no-brainer that I'd apply here.

Encouraging culture

There's such a good support network here. We have a buddy program which is run by the graduates who are one year above us, and its great having someone we can go to with questions or issues. We also have a mentor who can help us out, and in general everyone is so friendly and approachable. This is why my main piece of advice for new graduates would be to always ask lots of questions. Everyone is willing to help and you'll learn a lot from the people around you.

Top training

When I look back at where I started and how much I've learnt over just six months, I'm amazed. The learning and training available is one of the things that really adds to the BDO grad experience.

I started as a Grad in January, following a month of training in December. This involved a graduate induction that gave me a good introduction to the firm and the different systems I'd use. During this time I also undertook the two-week –Audit Skills 1 course. This involved interactive training and hands-on experiences that provided me with a great idea of what it's like working directly with clients. I'm going to undertake my –Audit Skills 2 course in two weeks’ time, and I'm really looking forward to learning more about the work at BDO.

This training means I've been able to do a variety of work with a broad range of clients. One highlight for me was being specially commended by one of the managers, who acknowledged how well I'd worked with my senior auditor on an audit engagement for a hotel. We worked on the file together and, although there was a very tight deadline, we managed to do all the work within the timeframe.

I'd really encourage people to apply to the Grad Program at BDO. I love how each task is different and so far, every aspect of the program has been such a great experience.
