Nick Kervin, now a Partner and Digital National Leader based in Melbourne, shares what drew him back to the firm, the experiences that shaped his leadership, and how BDO continues to support leaders at every stage of their careers.

Can you give me a brief overview of your career path at BDO?

I first joined BDO in Adelaide in 2014 as a subcontractor, and after two years working closely with the team, I was offered the opportunity to become a partner. I spent six years there before deciding to pursue opportunities outside the firm. What I thought would be a longer break turned out to be a short hiatus, and I soon returned to the firm in Melbourne. When I left, I had been serving as the national lead for technology advisory — a role I was humbled and grateful to step back into.

What drew you back to BDO?

The chance to build something meaningful from the ground up was really appealing. The firm was looking to grow its advisory capability in Melbourne, and that challenge immediately resonated with me. On my first day back, I passed by our five values on the wall. It was a simple moment, but it reminded me how rewarding it is to work at a firm that aligns with your personal values.

What did you learn during your time away that you’ve brought back into your leadership role here?

I moved into a very different part of the IT sector, working closely with entrepreneurs and founders. It exposed me to a leadership style that didn’t always align with my values, while strengthening my delegation skills and sharpening my ability to manage challenging stakeholders. Those experiences have made me a more confident and capable leader at BDO.

Was there a defining moment that made you feel confident you’d made the right decision?

Absolutely. Reconnecting with the digital and cyber partners made a huge impression on me. The warmth of the welcome and the team’s genuine commitment to collaboration, supporting each other, and growing our market presence together reaffirmed that I’d made the right choice.

Are there changes to BDO's culture or strategy that made your return and your progression to National Leader possible?

Yes. The firm has made great strides toward a national mindset. While I was away, advisory governance evolved in a way that strengthened our national digital strategy. That alignment and clarity played a big part in supporting my return to the digital national leader role.

How does BDO develop, support, and empower leaders?

I’ve often described BDO as a very 'fertile’ place to grow as a leader. If you develop a clear strategy and plan, the partnership will back you and support your ambitions. I’ve also seen a stronger commitment to leadership development and diversity across all levels, which is something I’m excited to continue building for our emerging digital leaders.

Where do you see the biggest opportunities for people who want to build a long‑term career at BDO?

For those who are patient, committed and eager to learn, BDO is the place to build your career in professional services. The partnership is looking for entrepreneurial-minded consultants who think creatively and add value to our strategy and services. We want people who are willing to stretch themselves and who understand that growth often comes from being a little uncomfortable.

If a former colleague is weighing up a return to BDO or client partnership, what advice would you give?

First, don’t assume the door is closed because you left the firm. BDO is always open to people who want to take on the opportunities the firm offers. Second, we’re growing quickly, which means there’s real scope for those who want to build something meaningful here. Finally, start with an open and transparent chat. Talk honestly about why you left and what you’re looking for now. That’s the best way to explore whether returning to BDO is the right next step.
