Sherif is BDO’s Global Natural Resources & Energy Leader, a role that encompasses the services BDO provides across the globe to clients in the mining, oil and gas, and renewables sectors.

Sherif is recognised in Australia as a leader in his field, having prepared over 750 public Independent Expert Reports (IERs) for schemes of arrangements, takeovers, compulsory acquisitions, related party and other control transactions. He has also acted as investigating accountant for over 100 IPOs for listings on the Australian Securities Exchange. Sherif is also sought after to act as an expert witness in the areas of valuation and loss of profits.

Sherif’s valuation experience covers small, medium-sized, and large listed and unlisted companies across a broad range of sectors, with a focus on natural resources and associated industries. His valuation reports have been required for many different purposes, including transaction support, capital raising, change of ownership, taxation, financial reporting and litigation support. He is highly regarded for his practical problem-solving strategy and attention to detail, both of which are of enormous benefit to his clients within his area of expertise.

He has acted as an expert witness for matters in the Supreme Court of Western Australia, Federal Court of Australia, Family Court of Western Australia, Singapore International Arbitration Centre and the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta. Sherif has also presented on valuations at many industry events and seminars, and contributed the chapter on independent expert’s reports (IERs) in the book Schemes of Arrangement (Federation Press).

Sherif has close to 40 years’ experience in executive leadership, corporate advisory, and finance roles in Australia and Europe. Sherif commenced his career in 1987 with BDO in London. He moved to Perth permanently in 1997 and was admitted as a Corporate Finance Partner of BDO in 2001. In 2007, Sherif was appointed as the head of BDO’s Corporate Finance & Deal Advisory team and in 2009, he became the Chairperson of BDO in Western Australia, a position that he held until 2018. In 2018, Sherif was appointed as BDO’s Global Natural Resources & Energy Leader.

Sherif is a CA BV (Business Valuation) Specialist, as recognised by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) and received the Meritorious Service Award in 2024 for services to CA ANZ.

  • Contributed the chapter on IERs to the book Schemes of Arrangement (Federation Press)
  • Contributed to drafting the independent expert section of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC’s) Information Sheet 214 (INFO 214): Mining and resources: Forward Looking Statements in 2016
  • Invited by ASIC to represent the corporate finance community in the consultation about revisions to INFO 214
  • Acted as liaison between ASIC and the joint committee of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (VALMIN committee) to finalise the wording and practical application of the 2015 edition of the VALMIN Code
