BDO Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of five new partners, strengthening the firm’s commitment to growth and reinforcing its national presence with additions to its Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane offices.
In Melbourne, Masao Kamiyama joins as partner in global expatriate and employment taxes.
With over 20 years of professional experience, Masao brings deep expertise in personal and employment tax compliance services, particularly for Japanese expatriate executives working in Australia.
His appointment underscores BDO’s focus on enhancing its cross-border capabilities and client support services in this specialist area.
Masao is widely recognised as a key liaison between Japanese businesses and major accounting firms in Australia.
His career includes a significant tenure as the Japan service desk leader at a global accounting firm, and most recently, he held a senior leadership role at Vialto Partners.
BDO's Melbourne Office Managing Partner, David Garvey highlighted Masao’s unique qualifications.
“Masao’s extensive experience spans a wide range of industries including energy and resources, mining, financial services, IT and technology, retail and consumer, manufacturing, automotive, food, industrial, construction, and real estate,” said David.
In his new role, Masao will focus on helping clients navigate complex compliance requirements, minimising tax risks, and tailoring strategies to suit individual circumstances.
Also joining the Melbourne office is Katie McNamara, who comes on board as a project and infrastructure advisory partner.
David said as part of her role, Katie will head up BDO’s sports and entertainment team.
“Katie and her team have built a reputation as trusted advisers across the sports, events, arts and visitor economy sectors with more than 40 years combined experience,” David said.
“The team has delivered some of the most significant sporting, major events and cultural projects in Australia and globally. The move of her entire team to BDO ensures clients can enjoy seamless service continuity and retain access to the deep sector knowledge, technical excellence and strong relationships that have defined the practice.
“The team offers a comprehensive suite of services to governments, sporting bodies, venues, event organisers, and cultural institutions, helping them make informed decisions, secure investment, and deliver projects that generate lasting economic and social benefit.”
In Sydney, James Smithers joins as a partner in project and infrastructure advisory, bringing over 24 years of experience in strategic infrastructure planning, investment decision-making, and policy development.
James has a strong track record supporting government and private sector clients across sectors including transport, energy, water, housing, and decarbonisation. James specialises in helping clients navigate complex infrastructure challenges, with a focus on developing robust business cases, shaping strategy, and aligning capital programs with long-term objectives.
BDO's Sydney Office Managing Partner, Grant Saxon welcomed the appointment.

In Adelaide, Nick Anderson joins as a business services partner, with over 21 years of experience working with sophisticated investors in family office environments and multinational corporations in Australia, UK, US, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
Nick specialises in family office engagement, corporate and commercial advice, and guardian and estate matters.
He has extensive experience developing and implementing strategies, simplifying investment and operating structures for family offices. Nick regularly engages with stakeholders across family and corporate groups, working closely with family groups and family businesses committed to establishing a legacy for future generations.
In Brisbane, Joanna Adams joins BDO as a partner in CFO advisory, bringing more than three decades of professional experience in financial reporting, audit support, and statutory compliance.
Joanna is known for her collaborative and solutions-focused approach, and her deep technical expertise in Australian Accounting Standards and corporate reporting.
Joanna has experience working with large multi-national clients, especially in the mining and resources sector.
She specialises in optimising financial reporting functions, guiding organisations through complex reporting obligations and accounting challenges, including audit readiness, corporate restructures, and implementation of new sustainability standards.
