BDO response to Treasury Options Paper, Regulation of accounting, auditing and consulting firms in Australia (July 2026)

BDO welcomes the opportunity to respond to Treasury’s Options Paper, Regulation of accounting, auditing and consulting firms in Australia (July 2026).

Professional services firms play a critical role in Australia’s economy by supporting business investment, capital markets, government, regulatory compliance and economic growth through audit, assurance, tax, advisory and consulting services.

BDO supports proportionate increased regulation of accounting, audit and consulting firms in Australia. Having large businesses operating through partnerships that are largely unregulated is inconsistent with the principles of transparency, strong governance and regulation which underpin a successful Australian economy and its financial markets. Regulatory reform should strengthen governance, transparency and firm-level accountability in a way that enhances public trust while preserving competition, innovation and market choice.
