AFR x BDO: Sustainability Leaders Program

Sustainability leadership delivering measurable impact

textured background

BDO is proud to partner with the Australian Financial Review (AFR) as the Presenting and Methodology Partner for the AFR Sustainability Leaders Program, recognising organisations that are turning sustainability ambition into measurable, tangible impact.

Together, the AFR and BDO are shining a spotlight on organisations that deliver value for business, communities and the economy.

About the AFR Sustainability Leaders Program

The AFR Sustainability Leaders Program recognises organisations demonstrating innovative, evidence-based approaches to sustainability.

It showcases initiatives that go beyond compliance to deliver measurable outcomes across sustainability, climate and reporting.

At the heart of the program is a simple question:

What sustainability innovation is creating measurable impact for your organisation - and beyond?

Why apply for the AFR Sustainability Leaders Program

If your organisation is making real progress on sustainability, it deserves to be recognised. Participants in the program will have the opportunity to appear in The Australian Financial Review, both in the print and online editions, receive a personalised assessment and benchmarking report developed by our sustainability experts and access discounted tickets to the 2026 Energy and Climate Summit and discounted rates for a Financial Review corporate subscription; along with significant industry recognition and collaboration opportunities with other Sustainability Leaders.

The program process

ROUND ONE

Nominate an organisation

Nominating your organisation - or someone else’s - is completely free.

Simply select the appropriate industry category and fill out a 10-minute questionnaire about your organisation and the sustainability innovation you would like to submit.

NOMINATIONS CLOSE WEDNESDAY MARCH 18, 2026.

ROUND TWO

Eligible companies are invited to enter

After the first round of assessment, eligible organisations will be invited to enter the second stage and will be required to pay an entry fee. For this stage, you will be asked to provide a more detailed submission that will form the basis for final assessment.

Companies that participate in round two will receive a benchmarking report developed by BDO's sustainability experts.

ROUND THREE

Winners selected

The Financial Review Sustainability Leaders industry lists will be published in The Australian Financial Review and on afr.com at a date to be confirmed in September 2026.

BDO's role

As Presenting and Methodology Partner, BDO brings its sustainability, ESG, climate and regulatory expertise to support the program.

Our national sustainability team has developed the Sustainability Value and Impact Framework (SVIF), which will be used to assess each entrant’s nominated innovation. The framework evaluates both how sustainability is embedded within an organisation and the extent to which it drives measurable value and outcomes.

Why this partnership matters

BDO’s role as Presenting and Methodology Partner brings professional rigour to the assessment of sustainability leadership.

Our involvement ensures the methodology reflects real-world complexity, credible measurement and practical application, so organisations are assessed on substance, not statements.

This gives organisations confidence that leadership is recognised not for ambition, but for demonstrated outcomes and maturity.
