Aletta is an Advisory Partner and National Leader of IFRS & Corporate Reporting at BDO in Australia. Aletta has over 25 years’ experience in financial reporting and accounting, including IFRS. Aletta has lectured on financial accounting and reporting, auditing and assurance and taxation at various Australian and South African universities. As an Associate Professor, she authored various financial reporting and accounting textbooks. Aletta also spent a number of years as a Project Manager at the Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB).

Aletta prides herself on her technical excellence, approachability, and the ability to solve problems practically. In particular, Aletta takes great pride in her ability to apply a wealth of technical expertise to real-world business situations. She works hard to ensure she is working with her clients, involving them at every step of the journey. She helps them to understand how she came to a recommendation, so that they can test any assumptions she has made and together they can come to the best IFRS solution possible. Having worked with a range of clients in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors, Aletta understands the challenges Boards and finance teams face.

Aletta’s involvement in sustainability and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting is a consequence of her focus on an organisation’s ability to create and sustain long-term value in a rapidly changing world, and managing the risks and opportunities associated with these changes. Aletta also puts a heavy emphasis on risk management, because monitoring and mitigating risks across all three dimensions (i.e. environmental, social and governance) is an important priority for any company that is serious about sustainability and ESG.

Aletta is committed to fresh, brave and innovative thinking which is demonstrated by her involvement in the implementation of BDO Lead, BDO’s IFRS 16 Technology Solution, in Australia and the development of the BDO’s Lease Management Services (i.e. outsourcing of lease accounting to BDO).

Aletta is an authentic leader who is focused on making a difference to the people around her. This has led her to become a Board Member at the Hagar International Foundation, a not-for-profit entity. Hagar International Foundation is an international organisation dedicated to the recovery of women and children who have endured extreme abuses. Hagar International Foundation is working to see communities free and healed from the trauma of human slavery, trafficking and abuse.

Aletta’s passion for education and sharing knowledge led her to also take up the role of Financial Educator, delivering our business growth program in Melbourne. Every business decision has a financial consequence, and as a Financial Educator Aletta is dedicated to empowering business owners by improving their financial literacy, so they make informed strategic decisions to grow their business.
