Luke Hare – The Dynamics of Audit: My career at BDO

11 August 2020

Luke Hare, Auditor |

My career in Audit has evolved over time. I studied a Bachelor of Business majoring in Accounting at James Cook University in Cairns, and audit was a part of the course but initially I didn’t think it was something I would pursue. However, once I started working at another firm in a tax/bookkeeping role, it increased my interest in a career working in audit because I get to work in a supportive and great team, and I also get to travel with my role.

Travelling with the team

I started with BDO (Nth Qld) in July 2018 and since then I’ve done a significant amount of travelling. I really didn’t want a job where I would be sitting behind the same desk for eight hours a day for the rest of my life. With audit, I don’t have to - I’m out working with clients all the time.

Many of my clients are located in Cairns, but I’ve also had the opportunity to work in regional areas such as the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory and various locations within Queensland.

Our team is dynamic. We have the opportunity to work closely with each other on different client engagements. When I’m out travelling, it is an opportunity to bond with colleagues as we not only work together but also have dinners together. My Partners come on the away trips too, so I get to work closely with them. The Partners are supportive and they’re not afraid to step in and help, especially during busy season.

Training and development

BDO has an education hub called the BDO Learning Academy. It contains a number of modules including tax and audit. So, when I first joined I focused primarily on the audit modules to get myself up to speed. As I have progressed, I have also been flown to Brisbane for audit skills training which I got to complete with my colleagues from several other BDO in Australia offices.

BDO (Nth Qld) also runs various workshops that I can choose to opt into, so if I have an interest in a particular topic (even if it’s not part of my immediate job) I can join in and learn.

I’ll commence my CA post-grad study in the first semester of 2021, then I want to move up the ladder here at BDO. I hope to become a senior auditor by the start of next year, work up to a manager role, and beyond.
