Putting people first: My career at BDO (Nth Qld)

From the minute I heard about BDO, I realised that they always put people first. This became obvious when representatives from the firm came to my university, where I was studying a degree in Marketing and Accounting. They talked to us about the focus on employees, the opportunities for professional development and a range of other employee benefits that they offer.

Full support with training and development

I've now been working at BDO (Nth Qld) for five years. I initially worked as a Graduate Accountant before being promoted to a Senior Accountant in 2017. During this time I have realised just how serious BDO’s commitment to our development is. I've been able to take advantage of a number of training opportunities, all of which have been fully supported by BDO. Highlights have included graduate induction (during which we were flown to Sydney to complete initial training), as well as regular tax updates and other internal training sessions.

The standout was the support I received during my Chartered Accounting (CA) studies. Although the study was difficult and certainly very full-on, the support that I received from BDO definitely helped me through the program. BDO funded the course costs, purchased additional study support and textbooks, paid for flights and accommodation for me to complete the Capstone workshop in Brisbane and offered paid study leave for each module. It was also great just being in an office where other people had already studied the CA program and were on hand to answer any questions I had.

In fact, questions are encouraged at all times. We have a lot of contact with our Partners who also sit within the open plan office with us. So, if we ever have a question all we need to do is ask.

A typical day in my role normally involves accounting duties such as completing financial statements and tax returns. I sit down each morning and work out what my priorities are for the day. Time management has been the greatest learning curve for me, but over my five years here I have noticed such a big improvement. I've changed the way I do a lot of things and it's really helped with my work.

It's great being able to work with such a broad client base, although my favourite type of company to work with is definitely small businesses. I enjoy getting to know them and seeing how well they are doing each quarter.

BDO offers flexible work arrangements

BDO is very attentive to offering flexible working arrangements. I take an hour and a half out each Friday to teach religious education at a local school. This was something I thought I'd have to give up when I started at BDO; however, when I mentioned it to the Partners, they were very supportive and through a flexible working arrangement I was encouraged to continue.  In general, there is a really lovely culture here. BDO really cares about its people and I'm very glad I chose to work here.
